This multi-year project at the University of California, Merced (UC Merced) consists of the comprehensive development--including design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance--of buildings for academic classrooms, administrative offices, state-of-the-art research laboratories, study areas, recreational facilities, student residence/housing and a student wellness center and counseling facilities. Also included is new infrastructure consisting of associate roadways, paving and landscaping, and outdoor athletic and recreational facilities and open space areas for students. The project expands the existing UC Merced campus to double its original size.
As part of the scope, CEI's Modular Division designed, manufactured, and delivered a custom, two-module data center deployment. This self-contained modular building involved walls, a roof, mechanical, fire protection and electrical systems. It was delivered on-site plug-in ready for data server racks, with all necessary electrical and mechanical infrastructure included.
In 2021, UC Merced became the first U.S. public research university to achieve LEED Platinum certification for all 11 buildings on campus and be certified carbon-neutral, earning one of the most stringent "green" building ratings in the world. Later that year, the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) awarded the project with the prestigious Project Excellence Award in the Educational category.
